Frailty Fighters Community Programme at Westbrook Library, Warrington
The Frailty Fighters programme delivered a series of practical, evidence‑based sessions at Westbrook Library, Westbrook Centre, Westbrook, WA5 8UD, every Saturday at 10:30am. These sessions were designed to help older adults, carers, and families build confidence, improve mobility, and reduce the impact of frailty.
I am an Occupational Therapist with previous experience as a personal trainer, supporting individuals and families across the North West of England. My work blends clinical expertise with functional exercise to help people stay stronger, safer, and more independent for longer.

Understanding Frailty: What It Is and Why Early Action Matters
This opening session explored the foundations of frailty what it is, how it develops, and why early recognition is essential. We discussed the difference between normal ageing and frailty, subtle early warning signs, and how timely intervention can significantly improve long‑term outcomes.
Strength Training for Independence and Daily Function
Participants learned simple, equipment‑free strength exercises that directly support everyday tasks. We focused on sit‑to‑stand variations, wall push‑ups, step‑ups, and safe floor transfers. The emphasis was on building strength that translates into confidence, stability, and independence.
Balance, Gait, and Fall Prevention Strategies
This session covered how balance works, why it declines with age, and practical balance drills that can be done safely at home. We explored fall‑prevention strategies, environmental hazards, and demonstrated the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test to help participants monitor their own mobility changes.
Mobility, Flexibility, and Joint Health for Healthy Ageing
We explored gentle mobility routines, strategies to maintain stride length and walking speed, and ways to reduce stiffness throughout the day. The session highlighted the importance of hydration, regular movement “snacks,” and joint‑friendly habits that support long‑term independence.
Cognition, Cognitive Decline, and the Role of Social Interaction
This dedicated session focused on the connection between cognitive health and physical function. We explored early signs of cognitive decline, the impact of dual‑tasking (thinking while moving), and how cognitive changes can influence balance and mobility. A key theme was the protective power of social interaction, with research showing that staying socially connected can slow cognitive decline and improve overall wellbeing. Community spaces like Westbrook Library play a vital role in keeping people engaged and mentally stimulated.
Managing Fatigue, Energy Levels, and Daily Pacing
Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms associated with frailty. We explored how to pace activities without losing strength, the difference between productive rest and deconditioning, and how to structure a day to maintain energy. Carers found this session especially helpful for supporting loved ones.
Home Safety, Environmental Adaptations, and Fall Risk Reduction
This practical workshop focused on simple home modifications that reduce fall risk, how to create movement‑friendly spaces, and adaptive equipment that supports independence. Participants learned how to assess a home like an occupational therapist and left with a clear, actionable home safety checklist.
Building Long Term Habits and Staying Motivated
The final session brought everything together. We explored how to build a personalised weekly movement plan, track progress, stay motivated, and access community resources. The programme ended with a Q&A and a celebration of everyone’s progress.
Supporting the North West Community Through Frailty Prevention
Frailty is not inevitable. With the right knowledge, movement strategies, and support, older adults can stay stronger, safer, and more independent for longer. My work across the North West of England focuses on giving families and carers the tools they need to take early, proactive steps.
